What Overspray Is and Why It Matters for Mobile Detailers
Overspray refers to any airborne product, paint, sealant, dressing, chemical, that drifts onto a surface it was not intended to contact. For a mobile detailer working in a residential driveway, the overspray risks are:
- Tire dressing spray drifting onto brake rotors or painted lower panels
- Paint sealant spray mist landing on glass or rubber trim
- a professional carpet-extraction formula (fabric cleaner) applied in the interior while doors are open, drifting to nearby painted surfaces
- Pressure washer mist carrying iron decon or wash solution onto nearby vehicles in the driveway
- Degreaser mist from engine bay cleaning reaching painted panels adjacent to the bay
How I Prevent Overspray at Every Appointment
- Apply to microfiber first, not directly to surface, Most interior chemicals go onto a microfiber before touching any surface. This eliminates drift from direct spray application.
- Tire dressing on an applicator, not a spray, Tire shine products are notorious for sling and overspray. I apply tire dressing with a small applicator pad, not a spray bottle. It gets only on the tire, not on the brake rotor, wheel, or painted fender.
- Close doors before any spray that could reach adjacent panels, When using spray products near open door seams, I work in segments and close doors to isolate spraying to the immediate area.
- Wind awareness, I set up with wind direction in mind. Products are applied on the downwind side of the vehicle when possible, or on still-air days. If wind is significant, I reschedule rather than risk product drift onto property.
- Pressure washer direction, The a pressure washer is used at the lowest effective pressure and directed away from adjacent vehicles, structures, and plant material when rinsing.
