What Kansas Roads and Weather Do to a Car Out Here

If you commute on K-10 or I-435, you spend every morning sitting behind a wall of brake dust. Those iron particles ride the air at highway speed and bury themselves in your clear coat, and no tunnel wash pulls them back out.

And parents on Pflumm Road with three kids and a lab. That is probably my most common booking, the one who keeps saying "I'll get to it" and finally calls when the smell wins.

Why the Tunnel Washes on Shawnee Mission Pkwy Are Wrecking Your Paint

There are three or four tunnel car washes along Shawnee Mission Pkwy that Shawnee residents use regularly. I understand, they're convenient, they're cheap, and the car looks clean when it comes out.

The problem is what those brushes drag across your paint: grit from every car that rolled through before you, ground in at speed. That is where swirl marks come from. My process never touches the paint with dirty media. Wheels and tires come first, TRX on the rubber and Wheely Clean acid on the bonded brake dust, so none of it lands on a clean panel. Then the whole car sits under Koch-Chemie Multi Star, a pre-wash strong enough that it is not sold at retail, so the road film and bugs are already broken loose before a mitt touches the paint. After a heavy rinse comes the Quivr foam contact wash, a high-lubricity soap that lets the premium mitt glide over the clear coat instead of grinding grit into it. Then every exterior surface, paint, glass and trim, gets Koch-Chemie Protector Wax, a multi-month wax that keeps brake dust and road film from bonding to the paint.

• Lake Quivira: gated, tree-covered and 15 minutes from me — the sap and pollen capital of the county from April through October.

Sar-Ko-Par Trails, Shawnee Mission Park and the lake weekends all mean the same thing inside a car: dog hair, trail mud and sunscreen on leather. That is exactly the work I set up for.
