Why Headlights Turn Yellow and Foggy in Kansas
Modern headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate plastic, not glass. Polycarbonate is strong and lightweight but reacts to UV radiation over time.
The yellowing is surface oxidation, not dirt in the traditional sense. A car wash will not remove it.
The Headlight Restoration Process, How It Works
- Wet sand to remove heavy oxidation, For severely yellowed lenses (most vehicles over 8 years old in Kansas), wet sanding with 400 to 800 grit wet/dry paper removes the oxidized layer. The lens will look extremely cloudy after sanding, this is correct, it is now an evenly scratched matte surface rather than an unevenly oxidized one.
- Progressively finer grits, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit wet sand to refine the surface and remove the scratches from the previous step.
- Compound and polish, Cutting compound removes the 2000-grit scratches and brings the lens to clarity. A finishing polish brings it to a near-glass finish.
- UV sealant application, The final step is applying a UV-resistant sealant specifically designed for headlight lenses. Without this, the restored lens will oxidize again within 6 to 12 months in Kansas sun.
