Why Kansas Summer Is Uniquely Destructive to Leather Interiors

Interior temperatures in a parked car in Overland Park or Olathe during July and August regularly exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit. At that temperature, leather loses moisture rapidly.

The ultraviolet radiation compounds the problem. UV breaks down the top coat on finished leather, which accelerates color fade and makes the surface porous.

What I Do During Leather Conditioning

Leather conditioning is included in every Full Premier Detail I perform. The process:.

How Often to Condition Leather in Johnson County

In Kansas, I recommend full leather conditioning two to three times per year, once before summer heat begins (April or May), once at the peak of summer (July or August), and once going into winter (October or November). If you have a vehicle that sits in direct sun most of the day, lean toward three times per year.

Between professional conditionings, keep a UV-blocking sunshade in the windshield when the vehicle is parked in direct sun. It is the single most effective thing you can do to reduce the rate of leather deterioration in Kansas summer.
