Best Frequency for Leather Conditioning, Kansas Summer Edition

Kansas summer heat ages leather fast. Most leather seats need conditioning twice a year, once in spring before summer heat, once in fall.

Why heat damages leather

Heat dries the natural oils in leather. Without replenishment, leather cracks within 5 years.

How Often to Condition Leather in Kansas, The Right Answer

In Johnson County, I recommend conditioning leather car interiors three times per year: once in April before summer heat peaks, once in July during the hottest period, and once in October going into fall. This is more frequent than the twice-a-year conditioning cycle recommended for moderate climates because Kansas summer is not moderate.

Interior temperatures in a parked vehicle in Overland Park or Olathe during July and August regularly exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit. At that temperature, leather loses moisture content rapidly, the same process that causes wood to crack when it dries out.

If the vehicle is garaged and does not sit in direct sun, twice per year (April and October) may be sufficient. If it is parked outside daily, stick to three times per year.
