How to Remove Stickers and Decals From Car Glass Without Scratching

Glass is one of the easier surfaces to remove stickers from because it is chemically resistant and scratch-resistant compared to paint. However, the process still matters, a razor blade dragged at the wrong angle, or a chemical left on tinted glass long enough to damage the film, causes more problems than it solves.

The primary risk with decal removal from glass is not the glass itself, it is the tint film on the interior side. Most vehicle windows have aftermarket or factory tint applied to the interior glass surface.

Step-by-Step: Exterior Glass Sticker Removal

• Heat the sticker, A heat gun or hair dryer applied for 30 to 60 seconds softens the adhesive. This is especially important for stickers that have been on the glass for months or years.
• Peel from an edge, Start at a corner or edge with a fingernail or plastic trim tool. Never use a metal scraper to start the peel, it leaves scratches on the glass border seals.
• Razor blade at a flat angle for residue, Any remaining adhesive residue on bare exterior glass can be removed with a single-edge razor blade held at 30 to 45 degrees. Keep the blade wet with soapy water or rinseless wash solution. Dry razoring scratches glass.
• IPA on a microfiber for final adhesive removal, Isopropyl alcohol dissolves remaining adhesive residue cleanly on exterior glass.
• Final glass cleaning, Wipe down the entire surface with the standard glass cleaner process to remove all residue before the area hazes.

Interior Tinted Glass: Different Rules

For stickers on the interior glass surface, a registration sticker, a parking permit, a decorative decal applied to the inside of a window, the process must account for tint film. Do not use a razor blade on interior glass with tint.

The safe interior process: use a plastic trim tool to peel edges, apply isopropyl alcohol (50% or less) to a microfiber and work the adhesive residue gently until dissolved. Do not scrub.
