Why Fabric Headliners Are Easy to Damage During Cleaning

The headliner in most vehicles, the fabric ceiling panel, is glued to a compressed foam or cardboard backing board. The adhesive that holds the fabric to the backing is water-soluble and temperature-sensitive.

This is why I do not aggressively spray and scrub headliners the way I clean door panels or carpet. The approach is completely different.

The Safe Headliner Cleaning Process

• Controlled steam, low water volume, high temperature, The McCulloch steam cleaner at 212 degrees, held 6 to 8 inches from the headliner surface and moved continuously, cleans the fabric without saturating the backing. The steam cleans on contact and evaporates quickly, leaving minimal moisture.
• Microfiber wipe immediately after steam, Light pressure, in the direction of the fabric weave, immediately after the steam pass. This lifts the contamination loosened by the steam before it can re-deposit as it dries.
• No direct spray on the headliner, Any product sprayed directly onto headliner fabric introduces more liquid than the backing can safely tolerate. I spray cleaner onto a microfiber and apply the microfiber to the surface, not the product to the surface.
• Spot treatment for stains, A targeted upholstery cleaner on a microfiber, applied with minimal liquid, worked in from the outside of the stain toward the center. The most common headliner stains in Johnson County vehicles are from sunroof rain entry, hair product transfer, and seat contact on convertible-style headliners.
• No extraction on headliners, Shop vac extraction is safe on seat fabric and carpet because they are mounted to structural panels. Do not apply extraction pressure to a headliner, the suction can pull the fabric from the backing on vehicles with weakened adhesive.
