Why Tire Shine Slings Off and Ruins the Work

Tire dressing sling happens when too much product is applied to the tire or when the wrong product type is used. Water-based tire shines that are applied wet and not allowed to dry before driving are the primary cause.

The cause is almost always product volume. A tire that looks shiny with one heavy coat applied is a tire with five times more product than it needs.

How I Apply Tire Dressing Without Sling

• Clean the tire first, No dressing product goes onto a dirty tire. I brush the tire surface and sidewall with a dedicated tire brush and rinse (or wipe clean) before any dressing is applied. Dressing over a dirty tire seals the dirt in and accelerates brownish sidewall discoloration.
• Apply to a foam applicator pad, not directly to the tire, One small amount of product onto the applicator, spread thin before touching the tire. The tire gets a thin, even coat from the applicator, not a heavy spray-and-wipe.
• Work the product into the tire surface, Use the applicator to work the dressing in circular motions across the entire sidewall until the surface is uniformly coated and the product is no longer visibly wet.
• Wipe off the excess, After application, a clean dry microfiber wiped across the tire surface removes any excess product. The tire should not be shiny-wet when finished, it should look like a uniform satin finish.
• Let dry before the vehicle moves, Even a water-based dressing applied correctly needs 10 to 15 minutes before the vehicle moves. I do tires last in the sequence so they have maximum drying time before the customer drives away.
