What paint protection film is
Paint protection film, usually called PPF or clear bra, is a thick, clear urethane sheet applied directly over painted panels. Think of it as a sacrificial layer. When a rock leaves the tire of the truck ahead of you on K-10 and hits your hood, the film takes the hit, deforms, and springs back. The paint underneath never knows it happened. Modern films are self-healing, meaning light scratches in the film disappear with heat from the sun or warm water.
It is applied wet by an installer who cuts the film to a pattern for your exact vehicle, squeegees it down, and trims the edges. A clean install is nearly invisible.
What it protects against
Rock chips are the main reason people buy it. The front bumper, the front edge of the hood, the mirrors, and the rocker panels get sandblasted at highway speed, and on a dark car those chips show up as white pinpricks within a year. Film also stops bug etching, bird dropping etching, light key and shopping cart scratches, and the door-edge chips from parking lots. It does not stop a deep gouge or a collision.
What it costs
It varies by installer, by the quality of the film, and by how much of the car is covered. A full-front kit on a new SUV is a very different job than a bumper only on a sedan, and the labor is most of the price. Get quotes from a couple of dedicated PPF shops and look at their edges on a finished car before you commit. I have no arrangement with any installer, so I have no reason to steer you anywhere.
How to wash and maintain PPF
Film is easier to hurt in the first days than in the years after. Do not wash it for about a week after install so the adhesive can fully cure and the water under the film can evaporate. After that, treat it like good paint with a few extra rules.
- Hand wash only. Automatic wash brushes can catch a film edge and lift it. A rinseless or two-bucket hand wash is ideal.
- Never aim a pressure washer at a film edge or seam. Rinse at a low angle, a couple of feet back.
- No clay bar on film. Clay drags across the surface and can mar the top coat of the film or catch an edge. Bonded contamination on film comes off with an iron decon spray and a gentle wipe instead.
- No compounds, no polishing. The self-healing top layer is thin and abrasives take it off.
- Sealant is safe and helpful. A Koch-Chemie Protector Wax like Koch-Chemie Protector Wax sits on the film the same way it sits on paint, keeps it slick, and makes bugs and bird droppings release before they etch.
- Watch the edges. If an edge starts to lift, do not pick at it. Take it back to the installer.
How I detail cars with PPF
I do not install film, but a good share of the newer trucks and luxury SUVs I detail in Johnson County have it, and the process changes a little. On the wash I stay off the edges with any pressure and use one clean towel per panel, same as always. On The Premier Signature, iron decon goes on the film to dissolve embedded brake and rail dust, but the clay bar skips every filmed panel and only touches bare paint. Then the whole car, film and paint alike, gets the Koch-Chemie Protector Wax. The film ends up as slick as the paint next to it.

Is PPF worth it?
If you plan to keep the car for years, drive the highway daily, and care about the front end staying chip-free, yes. If you trade every three years or the car mostly sees side streets, the money is better spent keeping the paint clean and sealed. Either way, film only protects what is under it, and it still needs to be washed right.
