Paint Protection Film vs. Detailing, What Each One Actually Does
Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a thick polyurethane film physically applied over paint to absorb rock chips, road debris impacts, and minor scratches before they reach the clear coat. It is installed in segments by trained installers using template-cut material and requires days of cure time.
Detailing, specifically iron decontamination, clay bar, and paint sealant, is a surface cleaning and protection process. It removes contamination from paint that already exists and applies a chemical protection layer that repels water, reduces UV damage, and protects against minor chemical etching.
These are not competing products. PPF prevents physical damage to the paint.
What PPF Cannot Do and Where Detailing Fills the Gap
PPF does not prevent iron contamination from embedding in the film surface. Brake dust and rail dust accumulate on PPF just as they do on paint, and PPF that is not maintained with periodic iron decon becomes contaminated and discolored over time.
PPF also does not self-clean. The surface still collects tree sap, bird dropping acid, road tar, and all the same organic and chemical contamination that unprotected paint does.
Most vehicles in Johnson County do not have full-body PPF. Most have no PPF at all.
What I Currently Offer in Johnson County
I do not currently install PPF, it requires different training and equipment that I am developing as a service for 2027. What I do offer is the full detailing and decontamination process that maintains whatever paint or film protection is currently on your vehicle.
