Electric vehicles present two specific challenges that conventional cars do not: interior materials that are often more delicate than standard production vehicles, and a complete absence of an exhaust or engine bay, which means the undercarriage and wheel areas accumulate brake dust differently than a combustion engine vehicle.
On interior materials: Tesla Model 3 and Model Y use vegan leather (synthetic PU leather) that requires steam at controlled pressure and conditioning products that will not cause delamination. The large touchscreen cannot be cleaned with any product containing ammonia or alcohol, distilled water on a microfiber is the only safe option.
On the exterior: EVs use regenerative braking, which means less mechanical brake pad use and, on most models, significantly less brake dust accumulation than a conventional vehicle. However, the models that do use traditional friction brakes in addition to regenerative braking (including some Rivian and Lucid configurations) accumulate iron contamination normally.
