What Makes the Tesla Model Y Different to Detail
The Model Y has several material and design specifics that change the product selection and process compared to a conventional vehicle. Here is what I account for when I detail a Model Y in Johnson County:
- Vegan leather seats, Not real leather. The synthetic PU material cleans differently, it does not absorb conditioner the way genuine leather does, and high steam pressure can cause delamination at seams. I use steam at a controlled pressure and safe distance on Model Y seating.
- White interior option, The white vegan leather seating surface and white door panels in the white interior package stain easily. Dark denim dye, fast food packaging, and sunscreen all transfer onto white surfaces. Steam plus targeted spot treatment is required on any stained areas.
- The touchscreen, 15.4-inch center display with oleophobic coating. Cleaned with distilled water on a lint-free microfiber only. No glass cleaner, no IPA, no ammonia.
- Tesla paint, Generally applied well but on the thin side compared to German manufacturers. The Model Y went through some quality control periods (2020-2021 in particular) where paint application was inconsistent. I inspect paint condition before committing to iron decon and clay pressure.

- Interior surfaces, a professional interior cleaner (appropriate for synthetic leather), diluted at safe ratio for vegan leather surfaces. Steam at reduced pressure for seam areas.
- Touchscreen and displays, Distilled water only. Clean microfiber, no pressure.
- Exterior paint, a rinseless wash (pH-neutral, paint-safe), iron decon (pH-neutral), clay bar at appropriate pressure for Tesla paint thickness, a paint sealant hand-applied.
- Wheels and tires on wheel barrels and faces. Aero wheel caps cleaned separately from the wheel surface underneath.
- Glass, All exterior glass cleaned with safe glass cleaner post-wash. The panoramic glass roof on the Model Y is treated on the exterior with the same care as painted surfaces, no abrasive wiping, always in straight strokes with fresh microfibers.
