The Only Safe Way to Clean a Tesla Touchscreen

The touchscreen in every Tesla model, Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, has an oleophobic anti-fingerprint coating applied at the factory. This coating is what causes fingerprints to resist sticking and makes the screen feel smooth to the touch.

Products that destroy the oleophobic coating:

Once the oleophobic coating is stripped, the screen becomes a fingerprint magnet that is extremely difficult to keep clean, and the coating cannot be reapplied outside of a factory service.

What I Use on Tesla Screens During a Detail

Distilled water on a clean, lint-free microfiber. That is it.

Tesla themselves recommends distilled or deionized water for screen cleaning, and lists isopropyl alcohol wipes (50% or less) as acceptable for sanitization on non-screen surfaces only. For the screen itself, water only is the safest protocol regardless of what you read in Tesla owner groups.

I use the same protocol on the instrument cluster display, the rear passenger screens in Model S and Model X, and the rearview camera display. Any screen surface in a Tesla is treated as oleophobic-coated until I have confirmed otherwise.

Tesla Interior Detailing in Johnson County

I detail all Tesla models in Johnson County, Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X. The white interior package in Model 3 and Y requires extra care on the center console and door panel surfaces, which show staining easily.
