What Water Spots Are and Why They Happen in Johnson County
Water spots form when water evaporates on paint and leaves behind the minerals it was carrying. Kansas municipal water in Overland Park, Olathe, and Leawood has significant calcium and magnesium content.
If the minerals sit long enough and the paint is hot enough, they begin to etch into the clear coat. Etched water spots cannot be removed by washing or clay bar, they require light paint correction (polishing) to cut below the etch depth.
How to Remove Fresh Water Spots (Not Yet Etched)
Fresh water spots, those left within the past few days that have not etched, can typically be removed with a combination of:
- Diluted white vinegar solution, Acids dissolve mineral deposits. A 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and distilled water applied to the affected panel, left for 30 seconds, and then wiped with a clean microfiber removes fresh calcium deposits on most paint. Do not let it dry on the surface.
- Dedicated water spot remover, Products specifically formulated for mineral deposit removal are more effective than vinegar on stubborn spots. Applied by hand, worked in with light circular pressure, then wiped clean.
- Clay bar, After chemical removal, claying the panel removes any residue and restores a smooth surface for sealant application.
Preventing Water Spots Between Details
The paint sealant I apply on every Full Premier Detail, paint sealant, dramatically reduces water spot formation. The hydrophobic surface causes water to bead and sheet off rather than sitting flat and evaporating.
Between professional details, the most effective prevention is immediate drying after any water exposure, rain, wash, or sprinkler contact. Carry a high-GSM drying towel and blot panels dry before the water can evaporate on its own.
