Somebody got sick in your car. A kid, a friend, a rideshare passenger, it does not matter to me and I am not going to make it weird. What matters is what you do in the next hour, because vomit is one of the few messes where the first hour decides whether the seat comes back or not.

What to do tonight, before you call anyone

If you do those six things, the job on my end is a lot easier and the seat has a much better chance of coming back to normal.

Why it still smells after it looks clean

Vomit is stomach acid, partially digested food, and digestive enzymes. The surface wipes up fine. The liquid does not stay on the surface. It runs down through the fabric, into the foam cushion, and along the seams into the seat frame. That foam holds it like a sponge.

The smell you notice two days later is not leftover food. It is bacteria breaking down the proteins that soaked into the foam, and it gets worse every time the cabin heats up. That is why a seat can look spotless and still turn your stomach on a warm afternoon. Surface cleaning never reaches it. Fabric cleaner from the auto parts store sits on top and dries there.

How I actually clean it

I do this inside the Interior Reset. Here is the order of operations on a vomit job.

  1. Enzyme pre-treatment. On cloth seats and carpet I apply an enzyme cleaner and let it dwell. Enzymes break down the protein instead of masking it, and that is the only thing that stops the smell at the source.
  2. Hot extraction. I flush the seat and carpet with the extractor and pull the liquid back out. This is the step that gets the mess out of the foam. I keep going until the water coming out runs clear.
  3. 212°F steam. My commercial steam cleaner sanitizes the fabric and reaches into seams, stitching, and the crevice between the seat bottom and the seat back where liquid always collects.
  4. Seat tracks and buckles. This is the part most people miss. Vomit runs off the seat and pools in the seat track and around the seat belt buckle. I slide the seat forward and back and clean the tracks, the buckle housing, and the belt webbing itself.
  5. Plastics and door panels. Every hard surface nearby gets cleaned and wiped down, including the door pocket, the back of the seat in front, and the center console.
  6. Drying. Extracted fabric is damp, not wet. It is usually dry to the touch within a few hours with a window cracked.

If the smell has already set into the whole cabin, I add Odor Elimination. That is an ozone treatment that runs after the cleaning and neutralizes the odor molecules in the headliner, vents, and fabric the extractor cannot reach. Ozone only works after the source is removed, which is why I never run it first.

Leather is easier, cloth needs the full process

Leather and vinyl seats do not absorb liquid the way cloth does. I clean the surface, then focus on the stitching, the perforations if the seat has them, and the gap between cushions where it drained. Cloth seats need the enzyme, extraction, and steam sequence every time, because the foam is the problem, not the fabric.

How long it takes

A vomit job inside an Interior Reset usually lands between two and four hours depending on the vehicle size and how far it spread. Ozone adds time on top of that because the car needs to sit sealed and then air out before you drive it. Plan on the car being out of service for most of a day if it needs the odor treatment.

What it costs

For extreme messes, a whole back seat, a mess that sat for a week in the heat, or one that ran under the seat into the carpet pad, I quote one firm price from photos. Text two or three pictures to 913-391-1868 and I text back a number before I ever drive out. Full pricing is on the pricing page, and the Interior Reset page lists everything that comes with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

My kid got sick in the car seat and on the seat under it. Can both be cleaned?

Yes. The vehicle seat is handled inside the Interior Reset. The child car seat is a separate $50 Child Car Seat Deep Clean, where I take the cover and straps off, clean them, and clean the shell. Tell me when you book so I plan the time.

A rideshare passenger threw up in my back seat. How fast can you get to it?

Text me photos and I quote it the same day. I run two details a day at most, so I book it into the first open slot. Before I get there, do the six steps at the top of this page and keep the windows cracked.

Is it different on leather versus cloth?

Leather is faster because the liquid stays on top. I clean the surface, stitching, perforations, and the seams where it drained. Cloth needs enzyme, extraction, and steam because the liquid soaks into the foam cushion, and the foam is where the smell lives.

How long until the car smells normal again?

After extraction and steam, most cars smell clean the same day. If the odor had already set and I run ozone, the car has a faint clean smell for a day or two and then it is gone. If a smell ever comes back, the source was missed, and I come back and fix it.
