Most people who book their first mobile car detail have the same questions before they hit the confirm button: Do I need to be home the whole time? What do I need to provide? How long is this actually going to take? What happens if something goes wrong? This post answers all of it — before, during, and after the appointment — so there are no surprises when the day comes.
I am Joe Young, the owner and sole operator of Premier Detailing LLC. I serve all of Johnson County, KS — Overland Park, Olathe, Leawood, Lenexa, Shawnee, De Soto, Gardner, Spring Hill, Prairie Village, and everywhere in between. I have completed hundreds of details in residential driveways, apartment parking lots, and office park spaces across the county, and the questions I get most often from first-timers are variations of the same concern: I do not know what to expect and I do not want to be caught off guard. This post is the answer to that.
Before the Appointment — What You Need to Do
Remove Personal Belongings
Take out anything you do not want moved or that has personal or monetary value. Phone chargers, sunglasses, gym bags, children's car seats if you want them out of the way, and anything important in the glove box or center console. You do not need to "pre-clean" — the point of booking a detail is that someone else does the cleaning. But your personal property should be removed before I arrive.
Make Sure I Have Access to Water
For exterior work and interior steam extraction, I need a water source. A standard garden hose connected to an outdoor spigot at your home is what I use in almost every residential appointment. If you live in an apartment or a property without easy hose access, tell me when you book — I carry enough water for interior-only steam work, and we can work out the exterior situation case by case. Do not assume this is a problem before you ask.
Make the Vehicle Accessible
Park in a location where I can work around all four sides of the vehicle — not flush against a fence or wall on one side. A standard driveway is ideal. If you have a garage, outside is better for ventilation when I am steam cleaning the interior. Make sure the vehicle is unlocked and you can meet me briefly at the start of the appointment to walk through the job and point out any specific areas of concern.
You Will Get a Text When I Am on the Way
I will text you that morning with an estimated arrival time and again when I am about 15 minutes out. You do not need to be standing in the driveway waiting. Just make sure your phone is nearby and you can come out for a two-minute conversation when I arrive.
When I Arrive — The Start of the Appointment
The first thing I do when I arrive is a walk-around with you. This takes about five minutes. I look at the vehicle, you tell me anything specific you are concerned about — the coffee stain on the rear seat, the dog hair in the cargo area, the scratches on the door panel — and we confirm which service we are doing and any add-ons. This is the time to mention anything unusual. It is also the time where I will note any pre-existing damage like paint chips, cracked trim, or torn upholstery so there is no question later about what was already there before I touched the car.
After the walk-around, I unload my equipment and get to work. You do not need to stay outside. Go about your day. I will text you when the detail is complete.
During the Detail — What Is Actually Happening
The exact sequence depends on which service you booked, but here is a general picture of what a full detail day looks like.
Equipment Setup (10–15 minutes)
I unload the McCulloch steam cleaner, RIDGID shop vac, California Air compressor, RYOBI pressure washer, chemical kit, and microfiber supply. The steam cleaner takes about ten minutes to reach full pressure. I use that time to do the initial vacuum pass on the interior.
Interior First (2–3 hours for a sedan Interior Reset)
Vacuum, air compressor blast of crevices and vents, full vacuum, Carpet Bomber application on carpets and fabric, steam of carpets and extraction, second vacuum, door jamb wipe-down, steam of all door panels and plastics, full interior steam in sequence, seat cleaning, dashboard and console wipe-down, interior glass streak-free cleaning.
Exterior (1–1.5 hours for a sedan with Full Premier Detail)
Dark Fury iron decontamination spray on wheels and paint, rinse, clay bar over all paint surfaces to remove embedded contamination the iron remover loosened, rinseless wash with P&S Rinseless Wash solution panel by panel, drying, P&S Bead Maker ceramic sealant applied to all paint surfaces, wheel cleaning and dressing, glass cleaning.
Final Inspection and Detail Pass
I walk the entire vehicle one more time. Touch up anything that needs it. This is where I catch anything I missed and make sure the result is what I am willing to put my name on. Then I text you that it is done and we do a walk-around together.
How Long Does It Actually Take?
| Service | Sedan | SUV / Truck |
|---|---|---|
| Interior Reset | 2.5–3 hours | 3.5–4 hours |
| Full Premier Detail | 4–5 hours | 5–6 hours |
| + Heavy Pet Hair | +1–1.5 hours | +1.5–2 hours |
| + Engine Bay | +45–60 min | +60–90 min |
I do not rush. The times above are realistic estimates, not minimums I am trying to beat. If a vehicle is in worse condition than expected — heavier pet hair, more significant staining, or longer since its last detail — it takes longer, and I do not cut corners to hit an artificial time target.
What You Should Not Do During the Detail
The biggest mistake first-time customers make is hovering. I understand the instinct — this is your car, it is an investment, and a stranger is working on it. But watching over my shoulder while I am in the middle of a steam pass or a clay bar section disrupts concentration and adds zero value to the outcome. Trust the 57+ five-star Google reviews. Go inside, work, eat lunch, whatever. I will text you when it is done.
The one exception is if something unexpected comes up — a stain that requires different chemistry, a tear in the upholstery that was hidden under the seat, something I want to flag before I proceed. If that happens, I will stop and contact you before going further.
The Walk-Around at the End
When I text that it is done, come outside and we will walk the vehicle together. I will show you everything that was done and point out anything noteworthy — a stain that reduced significantly but did not come out completely, a water spot on paint that required extra attention, anything that looked different from what either of us expected. This walk-around is your opportunity to ask questions or point out anything you want me to look at again before I pack up.
I do not leave until you are satisfied. That is not a marketing phrase — it is how I operate. My zero-negative-review record on Google exists because I do not consider a job done until the customer has looked at it and confirmed it is right.
After the Appointment — How to Maintain the Results
A few habits that extend the result of a professional detail:
- Do not take the vehicle through an automatic car wash. The spinning brushes create micro-scratches in the paint and strip the ceramic sealant applied during a full detail. If exterior washing is needed between detail appointments, use a hand wash with rinseless wash solution and a quality microfiber.
- Address bird droppings, tree sap, and bug splatter within 24 to 48 hours. Kansas summers are hard on paint. These contaminants etch into clearcoat quickly in heat and UV exposure. The longer they sit, the more damage they do.
- Keep floor mats dry. The biggest source of interior odor development between details is moisture trapped under floor mats. After a detail, take the mats out periodically and confirm nothing wet is underneath them.
- Book a maintenance detail every three to four months. Johnson County pollen in spring, heat and UV through summer, road salt in winter — the conditions here work against a clean car year-round. A maintenance detail at $225 to $275 every quarter keeps the vehicle in consistently good condition rather than requiring a deep restoration detail once a year.
First-time customer note: I offer a loyalty punch card — five full details and the fifth is free. Ask about it when you book your first appointment. My goal is to be your detailer for the life of every vehicle you own, not just once.
Common Questions I Get Before a First Booking
Do I need to be home the whole time?
No. You need to be available at the start for a five-minute walk-around and at the end for another five-minute walk-around. Everything in between, you are free. Most customers are inside their home. Some go to work or run errands, especially for all-day full details. Just make sure your phone is on and you will see my text when it is done.
What if it rains?
Interior-only appointments are generally not affected by rain — I am inside the vehicle with the steam cleaner regardless of weather. For exterior work, I monitor conditions in advance and will reach out if a rescheduled appointment makes more sense. Light rain during an exterior detail is usually manageable. A storm is not. I will not apply sealant in the rain because it will not cure correctly, and I will not do it anyway and bill you for a job done wrong.
Is tipping expected?
Tips are appreciated but absolutely not expected. This is a service business — the price reflects the work. If the result exceeded expectations, a Google review is more valuable than a tip. My 57+ five-star reviews are what drive the next booking, and a review from a satisfied customer is the most useful thing you can do for a small business operated by a 19-year-old trying to build something real.
What if something does not look right after I leave?
Call or text me directly. I will come back and look at it. I stand behind my work, and if something I did caused a problem, I fix it. This has happened rarely — pre-existing damage that was not clearly identified during the walk-around, or a stain that came back as the material dried — but when it happens, the answer is a direct conversation, not a runaround.
