What Is Car Wax and Why Do People Still Use It?

Traditional car wax is made from carnauba, a natural wax derived from the leaves of a Brazilian palm tree. It produces a warm, deep shine that many people find visually appealing.

The problem is durability. Carnauba wax melts at relatively low temperatures and is stripped by rain, car washes, bird droppings, and road chemicals quickly.

Wax as a category is not wrong. Carnauba paste wax is just outclassed by a modern professional wax that bonds harder and lasts months. There is a reason detailers who care about results are not hand-buffing paste wax onto customer cars in 2026.

Durability in a Kansas Year

Johnson County gets both ends of the weather, and each end kills wax a different way.

Summer. A dark hood in a July parking lot runs well over 150°F. Carnauba starts softening around 180°F on the label and in practice goes hazy and streaky long before that. Add the UV, the highway bugs, and a couple of bird droppings, and a coat of carnauba applied in June is functionally gone by the end of July. Protector Wax is built to hold through that heat.

Winter. Road salt and the brine the county sprays before a storm are the worst thing that touches your paint all year. Wax has almost no chemical resistance to it, so the paint spends January through March bare. Application Time
